WHY SECURE YOUR SITE WITH AN SSL CERTIFICATE?

Boost SEO Position

Google gives preference to secure web sites that run using an SSL certificate. In addition to securing your data, an SSL certificate should therefore also improve your search engine ranking.

Take Online Payments

An SSL certificate will allow you to securely take online payments on your own web site without diverting to a third-party gateway such as PayPal. Your web users will be able to submit their credit card details securely, knowing that their information is in safe hands.

Secure Customer Data

If you ask your web users for personal data, such as email addresses, contact information or login details, an SSL certificate will ensure that data is fully encrypted during transmission over the internet and prevent other parties viewing that information in transit.

SSL Certificate FAQ

What is an SSL certificate?
SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. It is an encryption layer that encodes information that is exchanged between a client and a server, protecting the transmission of sensitive and private data between the browser and server.

An SSL certificate allows you to apply SSL encryption technology to your site, so that information traveling to and from it is encrypted. SSL certificates are expected by consumers for any site that handles sensitive information like identity information, credit card numbers, or confidential records.
How does an SSL certificate work?
An SSL certificate is a file installed on the web server that a web site is running on. This file is composed of two segments. The first is the public key, which encrypts data. The second is the private key, which decrypts data. When a client, such as a web browser, connects to an SSL secured server a unique session is created using these two keys. All data transmitted during this session is protected, and cannot be decrypted by any party other than that specific client and the server.
Why do I need an SSL certificate for my site?
If your site sends or receives sensitive information, customers expect it to be secured with an SSL certificate. Many will leave your site if they see that it is not secured. Furthermore, Google now rank sites that use an SSL certificate higher than sites that do not, so having an SSL certificate on your site can boost your search engine ranking. SSLs also allow the HTTP connection to use the HTTP/2 protocol allowing the use of a single compressed connection to transfer your website resources, thus making your website load faster.
What benefit is there to purchasing an SSL certificate instead of the free one?
Low assurance certificates such as free ones, encrypt the connection. Higher validation certificates perform the same encryption, and add peace of mind for your visitors by showing them that the certificate authority has validated your site as belonging to a legitimate business and come with a warranty that the encrypted data is secure. They are proven to increase conversion rates and are a must-have for e-commerce web sites. The paid SSL also offers proactive renewal monitoring (we monitor the renewal to make sure it gets renewed and installed) and can do an SSL verify either by DNS or HTTP where as the free one only does HTTP (if you have a certain website setup, this can break HTTP verification).
How many domains can I install the certificate on?
By default the certificate will support one domain, and will function both with and without the "www.". If you need a certificate for more than one domain, you will need to purchase a SSL certificate for each domain.
How do visitors know what kind of SSL certificate I'm using?
To find out what SSL certificate you use, visitors simply click the lock icon in their browser's address box. A new window pops up with information about your certificate.
Can I install my SSL at another web host?
Yes, you can use the certificate with any other provider.
Do SSL certificates work in all web browsers?
Our paid SSL certificates are compatible with full browser and mobile browser support. The vast majority of customers should have few issues connecting to any of the certificate options.
I only have one domain or subdomain now, will I be able to add more later?
Unfortunately not. The SSL is tied to the domain itself. For simplicity, we have grouped the SSL offerings into just 2 basic types, and provided configuration options for a single domain with no subdomains besides www., or wildcard subdomain functionality. The reality is that if you add wildcard functionality or a single domain, the SSL we issue you with will be a specific SSL that supports either wildcard subdomain functionality or a single domain. If you don't choose wildcard subdomain functionality, you will not be able to 'add' these in later without ordering a new certificate.
Can I upgrade my SSL Certificate if I change my mind?
Once you purchase a certificate, we can't upgrade it - a new certificate would need to be purchased.
Do I need a "dedicated IP" on my hosting account?
Whilst no longer required, dedicated IPs are recommended for full compatibility with older browsers. Our pricing includes the cost of a dedicated IP address (normally $4/mo), if you'd like this added to your account, please request this via our helpdesk once you have placed your SSL order.
How do I set up an SSL certificate on my web site?
If you're installing the certificate onto a Viridio web hosting account, Just go to the account addon area, select the SSL certificate you wish to have. Go through the order process, once the SSL is ordered and on your account you can do use our "Auto Install SSL" feature. Installing the SSL is fully automated, just fill out the form and the SSL will install itself automatically. You may need to tweak some settings on your web site to ensure that it is properly installed - however if you need any help with getting the SSL installed, we are available to assist.
What is the difference between a DomainSSL and a regular SSL?
The DomainSSL (DV SSL) is a fast issuance SSL Certificate, without the need to submit paperwork. The domain is validated using whois information and an approval email sent to the listed administrator. This type of certificate is for single Fully Qualified Domain Names (FQDN) such as www.domain.com or secure.domain.com and has a Wildcard option as well which can be used to secure multiple sub domains of a Top Level Domain. Only the FQDN appears in the certificate and site seal and because of this method the certificate is issued in minutes.
